Marianna
Clore Blase died on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at her home in San
Antonio. Her lifelong love of and talent for the theatre was matched
only by her devotion to her family. Marianna was born on August 17,
1929 in Evanston, IL, the first child of Rev. Gerald L. Clore and
Anna Ridlen Clore. Marianna graduated from Vickery Hillcrest High
School in Dallas in 1948 and the University of Texas at Austin in
1952 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Marianna studied theatre arts in
New York City with Martha Graham, Herbert Burghoff, and Florence
Kyte. She married A.J. Bob Blase in Dallas on May 1, 1955. They
moved to San Antonio in 1959, where Bob was the Director of the
Goodwill Industries and Marianna appeared on most San Antonio
stages. Her performances earned her four Globe Awards in the 1990s,
including "Best Actress in a Play" and "Best Actress in a Comedy" in
the same season, 1991-1992. The San Antonio Theater Community
designated her a "Living Legend" in 2000. She was a member of Actors
Equity, Screen Actors Guild, and American Federation of Television
and Radio Artists. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bob
Blase; daughters, Emily Blase of San Antonio and Julie Blase of
Austin; son, David Blase of San Antonio; sister, Burneta Clayton of
Nashville, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald Clore and Judy
Deloache of Charlottesville, VA; grandson, Jason Feuerbacher and
granddaughter, Aurora Blase of San Antonio; and four stage
"sisters", Mary Denman, Alice Finney, Helen Hogan Perkins and Andrea
Sandifer. Memorial Service "A Celebration of a Life: Memories of
Marianna" will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2002 at 5:00 P.M. at the
San Pedro Playhouse. In lieu of perishable remembrances, the family
requests tax-deductible donations be made to the Permanent
Maintenance Fund of the San Pedro Playhouse, P.O. Box 12356, San
Antonio, TX 78212.
