The Shadowbox by Michael Cristofer San Antonio College Department of Theatre and Speech Communication This Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play touches on the dehumanizing quality death imposes. The play interweaves the lives of three dramatically different terminally ill patients and their loved ones into a tale of universal mortality. The action takes place during the course of one day, on a hospital campus. The brilliance of the work deals with how characters relate to their impending death whether its remorse, rage, anger, denial or reminiscence. Each family and indeed character, struggles with different levels of loss, and all aspects of grief are given voice during the course of the play. The success of Shadowbox lies in its ability to deal with such tender subject matter and draw no moral conclusions. This play only offers perspectives to the audience without compromising the serious nature of terminal illness.
